When passing through Crystal Lake, finding the right spot to pause and sip a brew shouldn't be too much of a challenge if you know how to find the Cottage Pub. Located on the corner of the five street intersection of Grant Street, East Crystal Lake Avenue, West Crystal Lake Avenue, North Walk up Avenue and South Walk up Avenue, The Cottage is truly a central meeting point. A welcoming brick building with a white wood siding facade, The Cottage exudes familial approachable pleasantness.
Specializing in pub food, they offer such standards as half pound burgers, their own original Cottage pie, and fish and chips, but they don't limit themselves to just pub cuisine, also featuring build-your-own thin crust pizzas, fajitas, salmon filet, fettuccine Alfredo, fried chicken, and beef kabobs. As far as snacks, their selection is inimitable including wings, cheese balls, pretzels, quesadillas, nachos, cheesy garlic bread, Irish nachos, chicken fingers, and more. Every Monday their Jumbo shrimp is 75 cents, Tuesdays the pizza is half price, Wednesday is half price burger day, Thursday is 39 cent wing day, Friday is their all you can eat fish fry, and Saturdays and Sundays feature 75 cent oysters.
They make sure to keep the place lively with live music every Saturday and sometimes Fridays as well, but their musical selection doesn't stop there. Most Thursdays are karaoke night down at The Cottage. Always ready to revel in pub history, they had Irish Dancers for Saint Patty's Day. They followed this up with the Bagpipers Band the next day, and all week their menu featured Irish specials such as corned beef and cabbage dinners, bangers and mash, and corned beef sandwiches.
Intent on keeping their customers satisfied, the folks down at The Cottage keep the big game as big as possible on their huge big screen TVs, hosting and promoting game night with enthusiasm, free peanuts and popcorn, and prizes. They also manage to do regular yearly events such as the annual Beatles Blast wherein their entire parking lot turns into a festival. Coming into its sixth year, the event has been populated in the past with such elements as a Beatles Museum, a beer tent, raffles and prizes, kids drawing contests, a twist and shout competition, a bounce house, face painting, a VIP tent, and a variety of tribute bands such as the Beatles Tribute bands Cavern Beat and American English, the Led Zeppelin tribute Kashmir, the Pink Floyd tribute In the Flesh, and the Elton John tribute Robert Mar.
The Cottage may be a local hot spot for evening entertainment and youthful frivolity, but they're also known for their charitable work, which they still manage to make enjoyable such as their annual Cottage Charity Golf Outing. Initially started in 2011 to benefit the Make a Wish foundation, the Cottage Charity Golf Outing has evolved over the years at one point sending children of war veterans to summer camp, and now sending local kids to summer camp who otherwise wouldn't get the chance. The hundred dollar buy in gets each contributor lunch and dinner at the cottage, not to mention open bar access and, of course, a game of golf.
By far the most mentioned aspect of this place is the homely familial welcoming vibe that the owner and staff manage to offer each and every customer. Many regulars are there on a more than weekly basis, and simply can't get enough of the relaxing disarming ambiance and energy. For a local spot to pause for personable pleasantness, perhaps The Cottage is proper.
